Abstrakt
| Regional disparities have long been one of the EU’s open problems. Despite the fact that the performance gap between countries is narrowing in the EU, real convergence at regional level is not advancing at the proper pace. The paper assesses the extent of regional disparities both at the level of countries and at the level of regions. Employing the DEA method, the current level and development potential of European regions is examined. The analysis showed that the relationship between a country’s level of development and the level of regional disparities is negative in most EU countries, with developed EU countries achieving lower regional disparities than less economically efficient countries. The development of regions creates preconditions for development through a higher share of investments in research and development, but the latter is only weakly correlated with the efficiency of its use.. |
